Handwrite.io alternative: how notecardHQ compares

Handwrite.io vs notecardHQ: both write with real pens. $2.99 vs $3.25 all-in, volume pricing, custom handwriting, API docs, international mail, and where Handwrite.io wins.

5 min read

Handwrite.io writes cards with robots holding real pens and still ranks near the top of Google for searches such as "handwritten cards for customers" (Google results). If you are weighing it against alternatives, this page compares it with notecardHQ, the service we run, using Handwrite.io's own website and the few third-party sources we found, each linked. Everything was checked on October 25, 2026 and may change, so confirm with Handwrite.io before you decide.

One note on names: Handwrite.io is a different company from Handwriting.io, a New York startup that announced a postcard partnership with Touchnote in 2017 (GlobeNewswire). This page is about Handwrite.io.

What Handwrite.io offers

Its homepage says cards are "handwritten by our proprietary robots, not printed," with "real pens" and "real ink." Envelopes are handwritten too, with a real stamp, and it can replicate a customer's own handwriting.

The price is simple: $2.99 a card, including postage, card stock, and envelope. Volume discounts start at 100 cards, but the discounted rates are not published (homepage).

The site says its cards are "Handwritten in South Carolina," while its G2 seller page lists its headquarters as Rockville, Maryland, and a founding year of 2016. The homepage claims "thousands of customers" and shows logos from banking, education and real estate.

Where Handwrite.io is strong

  • A lower entry price. $2.99 all-in is $0.26 below our $3.25 for the first tier.
  • Your own handwriting. It can replicate a customer's handwriting. We offer four styles and no custom handwriting.
  • One simple price. Postage, card, and envelope are included, with no plan to buy first, which is how we price too.
  • Zapier. Its homepage points to a Zapier integration reaching 3,000+ apps.

Handwrite.io figures are from its homepage on October 25, 2026. Both columns include postage.

Read plainly: below 100 cards a month, Handwrite.io is cheaper. From 100 cards it offers a discount, but because the rates are private, you need a quote to know whether it beats our $2.95 from 500 cards, $2.35 from 2,500, or $1.95 from 10,000. We did not find an international price on its homepage; ours is published at every tier, postage included.

The API

Handwrite.io's homepage says only "We also offer an API for custom integrations." Its documentation lives on a separate site, documentation.handwrite.io, which shows up in search results for "handwritten notes api" (Google results). We did not review those docs, so we will not characterize its authentication, test mode, or webhooks.

Here is what ours does:

  • POST /api/v1/notes with a Bearer key creates one card.
  • An Idempotency-Key header means a retried request with the same key and body returns the same note, never a second card.
  • US addresses are verified before a note is accepted. An undeliverable address returns a 422 and nothing is created.
  • Statuses are created, card_printed, card_dispatched, and cancelled, and you can GET any note's status.
  • Test keys run the full note lifecycle without writing, mailing, or billing a card, and signed webhooks fire on every status change.

An MCP server lets AI agents send and track cards too. Our handwritten notes API guide walks through it, and the API comparison sets several services side by side.

How current is the information

Handwrite.io's public sitemap lists 15 pages, last modified in 2021 and 2022. That says nothing about the service itself, but it does mean some details on the site may be out of date, and the location differs between the site and G2. Confirm the price, what is included, and where cards are written before you place a large order.

How the writing is made

Both services write with real pens, so neither is a printed font. The difference on our side is a check before writing. A handwriting model turns each note into pen strokes, and OCR reads every word back first. Numbers have to read exactly, and any unclear word is redrawn. The full process is in how we check every card, and samples of our four styles are on the handwriting styles page.

Which one fits

Handwrite.io fits if you send fewer than 100 cards a month and want the lowest published all-in price, or you want cards written in your own handwriting.

notecardHQ fits if you want published prices at every volume, a known international price, or you are sending from your own code and want idempotency, US address checks, test keys, and signed webhooks, all documented in public. You upload your own card design and return address, and we can write the note from context you send.
