How much does a handwritten note service cost?

Handwritten note service cost, explained: pay per card, monthly plans, prepaid credits and quotes, the fees that are easy to miss, and what a card costs all-in.

6 min read

A handwritten note service costs roughly $2.85 to $4.55 for a single card written with a real pen, once postage is counted, and about $1.50 to $2.20 a card at thousands of cards a month. Services that print a handwriting font cost less. The headline price is rarely what you pay: postage, monthly plan fees and expiring credits decide the real number. All figures below are as listed on each company's own site on October 25, 2026, and may change.

The four ways services charge

Almost every service uses one of four pricing models. The model matters as much as the price, because it decides what you pay in a slow month.

Pay per card

You pay for each card you send and nothing else. This is the simplest model to budget.

  • LettrLabs lists a handwritten card with envelope at $2.86 on its free Starter tier, postage included, with API access on that tier (LettrLabs pricing).
  • Handwrite.io lists $2.99 a card including postage (handwrite.io).
  • Handwrytten lists a retail price of $3.75 a card with postage extra on its pricing page. Its other pages quote $3.25 and $3.75 to $4.00, so confirm the current figure.
  • notecardHQ, the service we run, charges $3.25 a card in the US at up to 499 cards a month, falling to $1.95 at 10,000 or more, with postage included and no monthly fee.

Monthly plan plus a per-card fee

You pay a platform fee every month and a lower price per card on top. This is the most common model among the larger services, and the one buyers complain about most.

  • Handwrytten business plans run from $449 a month plus $1.99 a card (Pro) to $2,499 a month plus $1.19 a card (Agency), with postage billed at USPS rates. Monthly plans are billed every four weeks, so there are 13 bills a year (Handwrytten pricing).
  • Simply Noted sells an Unlimited plan at $497 a month plus $0.99 a note plus postage. Its API, Zapier, Shopify and webhook integrations sit on this plan (Simply Noted pricing).
  • LettrLabs Premium is $399 a month (the same page also shows $449), with lower per-piece prices than Starter (LettrLabs pricing).

The fee has to be spread over the cards you send. On Handwrytten's Pro plan, 250 cards a month works out to about $4.57 a card once the fee and $0.78 postage are added. At 5,000 a month on Agency it is about $2.47. Plans pay off at steady, high volume and cost more than pay per card when volume is low or uneven.

Prepaid credits

You buy a pack of cards upfront and draw it down.

  • Simply Noted credit packs run from $2.80 a card for 100 down to $0.90 a card for 50,000, plus $0.82 postage per card. Credits expire after 12 months (Simply Noted pricing).
  • IgnitePOST lists prepaid credits at $1.75 to $4.39 a card with postage included, without publishing which volume earns which price. It also sells annual subscriptions, from $109 a month for 300 cards a year, about $4.36 a card (IgnitePOST pricing).

Large packs give some of the lowest per-card prices in the market. The catch is that you pay before you send, and unused credits can be lost.

Quote only

Some services do not publish card prices at all. Scribeless publishes postcard prices but prices handwritten cards, letters and integration subscriptions through its sales team. Inkpact, which uses human writers, offers volume-based pricing on request. Gifting platforms such as Sendoso sell on quotes. For these, ask for an all-in price per card at your volume and compare it with the published numbers below.

Real pen or printed font

Some services print a handwriting font instead of writing with a pen. That is usually the biggest single reason one service is cheaper than another.

  • thanks.io describes its handwriting as a digital printing process. A notecard is $3.04 on pay as you go, $1.83 on its $49 a month Business plan and $1.49 on its $199 a month Professional plan, US postage included (thanks.io pricing).
  • Postable prints handwriting fonts; its 500-card example is $3.29 a card with envelope, including the stamp (Postable).
  • Thankster describes "handwriting fonts" and lists folded cards from $2.09 down to $1.79 plus a $0.82 stamp and a small monthly fee (Thankster pricing).

Print is a sensible buy for offers and notices at volume. For a thank-you or a milestone, the point is that a pen touched the card. Real pen vs printed handwriting shows how to tell the two apart.

Costs that are easy to miss

  • Postage. Where it is not included, add about $0.78 to $0.82 per US card: Simply Noted and Thankster list $0.82, and Handwrytten bills the USPS rate.
  • Plan fees. Divide the monthly fee by the cards you actually send in a typical month, not your best month.
  • Credit expiry. A pack that expires before you use it raises the real price of every card you did send.
  • International mail. Few services publish it. Handwrytten charges international postage plus $0.10 a card. Thankster adds $0.60 a card. thanks.io lists an international notecard at $4.15, $3.15 or $2.81 depending on plan. notecardHQ is $4.25 a card all-in, down to $2.95 at volume.
  • Inserts and gift cards. Handwrytten charges a $50 setup, $20 a month storage and $0.50 per insert. Thankster charges $0.10 an insert in most cases, and you supply the gift card.
  • Custom handwriting. Handwrytten lists a custom handwriting font at $1,500 to $2,000 one time and a custom signature at $250.
  • Premium stationery. Heavy stock, foil and debossing cost more everywhere. At notecardHQ they are quoted per campaign; see stationery.

What a card costs at your volume

Handwrytten: the cheaper of $3.75 pay as you go or a monthly plan plus its per-card fee, with $0.78 postage added. Simply Noted: its credit packs bought upfront plus $0.82 postage. At very large prepaid volumes Simply Noted's packs cost less than our lowest tier. The handwritten note cost calculator runs the same comparison for any volume and share of international mail.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask for the all-in price per card: card, handwriting, envelope and postage.
  2. Use your real monthly volume, including slow months, and spread any plan fee over it.
  3. Ask what happens to unused credits and when they expire.
  4. Price international separately if any of your recipients are outside the US.
  5. Check which plan includes the API, if you plan to send from your own systems, and whether there is a test mode.
  6. Ask how the writing is made, and ask for a sample card.
